The Dallas Cowboys didn't draftJoe Milton III with the expectation that he'd immediately challenge for the starting quarterback job. But in just a short time with the team, the former Tennessee Volunteer is already generating buzz - and not just for his cannon of an arm.
Selected in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Milton came into rookie minicamp as something of a project.
His physical traits, particularly his arm strength, were never in doubt. It's his consistency, decision-making, and ability to adjust to the pro game that many viewed as developmental hurdles. But based on early impressions, the Cowboys' coaching staff seems optimistic.
Dallas offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer recently shared his thoughts on Milton's first few days in camp. "He made a throw on the move to the left the other day that was just ridiculous," Schottenheimer said.
"He's a bright-eyed guy, he's got a lot to learn, he's got a long way to go. He's really got a lot of talent, and he's doing a nice job."
Arm strength isn't the only thing impressing coaches
Milton became somewhat of a viral sensation during his college career for launching 70-yard bombs with ease and effortlessly throwing across his body on the run. That same raw ability is now being refined under the watchful eyes of Schottenheimer and head coach Mike McCarthy.
His early success in camp is particularly noteworthy considering how difficult it is for late-round quarterbacks to make a splash. Most are relegated to scout team duties or struggle to stand out amidst limited reps. But Milton is making the most of his opportunity, showing flashes of potential that have Cowboys fans intrigued.
Though he is still behind starter Dak Prescott and backup Cooper Rush on the depth chart, Milton's long-term ceiling has been a topic of speculation ever since his Pro Day workouts and the NFL Combine. Analysts have compared his arm strength to some of the league's top-tier quarterbacks - even drawing loose parallels to the likes of Josh Allen in of physical traits.
Milton's journey to the NFL was not a straight path. He began his college career at Michigan before transferring to Tennessee. While his time in Ann Arbor was inconsistent, his performance with the Volunteers helped rebuild his draft stock. In 2023, he threw for over 2,800 yards and 20 touchdowns, displaying improved accuracy and leadership. His growth as a signal-caller helped him secure a spot in one of the most scrutinized franchises in the NFL.
The Cowboys have historically valued quarterbacks with high ceilings, even if they require polishing. Schottenheimer emphasized that while there's plenty for Milton to work on - including footwork, play recognition, and pocket presence - the coaching staff is "excited to get their hands on him."
As training camp continues, the focus will be on how quickly Milton can absorb the playbook and adjust to the pace of the pro game. If he continues to impress, he could challenge for the QB3 role or, at the very least, position himself as a long-term developmental asset.
One thing is clear: Joe Milton's journey with the Cowboys is off to a promising start, and all eyes will be on how he continues to evolve in the months ahead.
