The Seattle Seahawks traded their starting quarterback to the Raiders on Friday in exchange for a third-round draft pick, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. This move reunites Smith with Raiders head coach Pete Carroll, who previously coached him in Seattle.

The Seahawks had reportedly been discussing a contract extension with Smith, but negotiations fell through, leading to the decision to trade him instead. Now, Seattle is shifting its focus to free agency, reportedly targeting Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold as a potential replacement.

A fresh start for Smith in Las Vegas

Smith, who revitalized his career with the Seahawks, now has a new opportunity with the Raiders. The 33-year-old quarterback had a standout 2022 season, earning NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors after throwing for 4,282 yards and 30 touchdowns. However, his performance dipped in 2023, prompting Seattle to explore other options at the position.

With the Raiders, Smith will compete for the starting job and bring veteran leadership to a team that has struggled to find consistency at quarterback. The reunion with Carroll could help him regain his 2022 form and establish himself as a long-term solution in Las Vegas.

Seattle's next move: Pursuing Darnold

With Smith out, the Seahawks are reportedly eyeing Sam Darnold as their next quarterback. The former first-round pick has spent time with the New York Jets,Carolina Panthers, and most recently, the Minnesota Vikings.

Darnold, 26, has had an up-and-down career but is still considered a viable option with potential. Seattle may view him as a bridge quarterback or a competitor for the starting role while they evaluate long-term solutions through the draft or future trades.

For now, the Seahawks are moving forward without Smith, while the Raiders hope his reunion with Carroll sparks a resurgence. This trade marks a significant shift for both franchises as they look to reshape their quarterback situations for the 2024 season.
