Tesla continues to show progress in the development of its humanoid robot, Optimus, a machine designed to help with household tasks such as childcare or cleaning. Since Elon Musk unveiled the project in 2021, the evolution of the robot has been significant. Recently, Musk himself posted on his X a video showing Optimus performing a brief but surprising choreography, with precise movements, great balance and remarkable flexibility.
The clip, which lasts just six seconds, has captured attention for the robot's fluidity of movement, a major improvement on the early versions, when there was not even a functional prototype. "More to come soon! The team has been working hard behind the scenes," said Tesla software engineer Milan Kovac, who also added: "Fully trained in simulation with RL, new optimizations and fixes have been implemented in our simulation-to-reality training code."
Estimated price
Although Optimus appears with a visible rope, Kovac explained that "the cable is there in case of a fall (it doesn't actually hold the robot), as it is an initial result that will become more stable quickly." Although at previous events some movements were teleoperated, the new video shows tangible progress towards full autonomy of the robot.
The estimated price of the robot will be between $20,000 and $30,000, with the goal of making it affordable to the mass market. Musk said that, in the long term, he expects Optimus to be cheaper than a car. "I think this is going to be the biggest product ever made, of any kind, because I think everybody's going to want an Optimus," the Tesla CEO said.
