The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as Food Stamps, is a financial relief for thousands of families in the United States to cover their basic needs. However, staying in the program requires meeting certain requirements, including a key process: recertification.
Once a person submits their application and is approved, the state SNAP office sends an official letter stating the length of time they will receive benefits. This period, called "active" or "certification," can range from one month to three years, depending on the case.
Although SNAP is a federal program istered by the Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service, it is run by state agencies, each with its own rules. This decentralization creates variations that can confuse the more than 40 million people who receive these benefits.
During the validity period, funds are automatically deposited each month onto the Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card. But this is not indefinite. Before the certification period expires, the beneficiary will receive an Official Expiration Notice. This notification is a signal to act quickly and complete the recertification process, which is necessary to continue receiving assistance.
How does SNAP recertification work?
When first applying, the state SNAP office sends an official approval letter, which shows the duration of your benefits that can be detected under the name of active or certification period and can last from one month to three years.
Every so often, usually every one to three years, beneficiaries must go through a recertification process to continue receiving SNAP benefits. As the expiration date of your eligibility approaches, you will receive a notice from your state agency. This notice will include a deadline for completing recertification, which involves ing your income, household size and any other relevant changes in your situation.
Each state has its own processes for notifying beneficiaries about recertification deadlines, so it is important to report any changes in financial or family circumstances, usually within 10 days.
It is essential to know the deadlines that apply in the state where you reside. In California, for example, most households have a certification that is valid for 12 months, while in households with elderly or disabled persons it may be extended to 24 months. In Florida, on the other hand, the standard period is six months. New York and Texas have their own criteria, so it is advisable to consult with a social worker or directly with the state office to avoid missing important dates.
