For millions of Americans who depend on Supplemental Security Income (SSI), May 2025 will be a month that stands out on their bank statements.
This month, some recipients will see two SSI payments - and for a smaller group, even three total Social Security-related deposits - hit their s due to the way the Social Security istration (SSA) structures its payment calendar.
While it may look like a financial bonus, the second payment in May is actually an advance on June's benefits. SSI is always issued on the first of the month, but when that date falls on a weekend or holiday - like it does this coming June - the payment is sent out early.
Why May 2025 brings more than one check
The first SSI payment for May is scheduled for Thursday, May 1, covering the usual monthly benefit.
The second check, which covers June's payment, will arrive Friday, May 30 - the last business day before the weekend. This approach ensures recipients have access to funds by the first of the next month.
For recipients who also collect traditional Social Security benefits, May could mean three deposits in total. These individuals will receive their SSI checks at the beginning and end of the month, along with their standard Social Security benefit, which is based on their birthdate:
- May 14 for birthdays between the 1st and 10th
- May 21 for birthdays between the 11th and 20th
- May 28 for birthdays after the 20th
Additionally, those who began receiving Social Security before May 1997 will receive their main benefit on May 3, with their SSI arriving separately on the 1st.
How the SSA handles 'double' months
Although it may feel like extra money, the second payment isn't a bonus - it's simply an advance due to the calendar. Similar situations will occur in August and October, when SSI recipients will again see two payments.
That means no SSI checks will arrive in September or November, since those months' benefits will have been prepaid.
The SSA has provided the following 2025 SSI payment schedule anomalies:
- May 30, 2025 (June's payment)
- August 29, 2025 (September's payment)
- October 31, 2025 (November's payment)
- December 31, 2025 (January 2026's payment)
All SSI payments are delivered either via direct deposit or to a Direct Express card, depending on your selected method. No special steps are required to receive these early payments - unless an unexpected second payment arrives without any advance notice, in which case the SSA should be ed immediately.
Understanding SSI eligibility
Supplemental Security Income is designed to help low-income individuals who are either aged 65 and older, blind, or living with a qualifying disability. Children may also qualify under certain criteria. However, adults with monthly earned income above $2,019 typically do not qualify.
May might bring a temporary bump to some recipients' bank balances - but the key takeaway is this: the SSA is not paying extra, just earlier. Knowing the payment schedule ensures no confusion when the extra deposit appears.
