Elon Musk has hit back at reports published by The New York Times, categorically denying that he is currently using drugs. According to the US newspaper, the businessman allegedly used ketamine, ecstasy and hallucinogenic mushrooms during the 2024 campaign in of Donald Trump, even suffering side effects such as bladder problems. In addition, the newspaper claimed that Musk had traveled with a box of pills and that it is unclear whether he continued to use substances after taking over the leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
On Saturday, Musk responded directly via his social network X, accusing the media outlet of lying: "I'm not doing drugs! The New York Times was blatantly lying," he wrote. He clarified that he tried ketamine in the past under medical prescription, and that he shared it publicly on X at the time. "It helps to get out of dark mental holes, but I haven't taken it since," the businessman said.
The day before, Musk appeared alongside Donald Trump in the Oval Office with a visibly bruised eye, which drew attention just after the article was published. Although he initially avoided answering directly about drug use, he later explained that the injury was the result of a game with his young son, named X, when he asked him to punch him in the face as part of a family joke.
When a journalist asked former President Trump if he was aware of Musk's alleged "regular drug use," his response was brief but positive: "I wasn't." He then added: "I think Elon is a fantastic guy," closing the matter without going into detail. In the past, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO has itted to taking ketamine in a controlled manner to treat a "negative mood," even suggesting that occasional use of the substance has been helpful in improving his professional performance.
