The hurricane season officially begins on June 1 and, to identify them, each year a list of names is chosen

From June 1, the hurricane season begins in the northern hemisphere

For 2025, the Meteorological Service's forecasts estimate that we will have a more active than usual season in 2025, due to the effects of climate change on the atmosphere. Ocean temperatures are higher than usual and this favors the formation of more intense and more frequent storms

To identify the different storms that reach hurricane category, meteorologists have created a list of 21 names (in alphabetical order). Some of them may have appeared in previous lists, but due to the increasing number of storms forming, an additional list is also considered, although it is rarely used

The Atlantic storm name lists are created by a committee of the World Meteorological Organization and are updated every six years. This year's list was last used in 2019 and begins with Andrea.

Meteorologists normally reuse these lists unless they are particularly destructive hurricanes or storms that generate a large number of deaths, causing the committee to remove the names to identify these storms historically. When this happens, the name is replaced by a new one with the same initial.

Historically, between 1991 and 2020, the Atlantic hurricane season averaged 14 storms. But in recent years, storm formation has been much more intense and has advanced further down the list

When these 21 names from the original list are exhausted, a supplementary list is applied, starting again with the letter A. Although this has only happened in two years, when more than 21 storms are recorded, it is very unusual

This supplementary list of names began to be used from 2005 when 28 storms formed. The second time it was used was in 2020 (30 storms). In both cases, a list drawn up with the Greek alphabet was used. However, meteorologists decided to change it to the supplementary list after 2020 because it was not functional as there is much similarity in the letters of the Greek alphabet and their translation into other languages.

This is the list of storms scheduled for 2025:
