Actor Denzel Washington starred in a tense moment on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival that quickly went viral on social media.
While posing with director Spike Lee and rapper A$AP Rocky to present his new film, 'Highest 2 Lowest', a photographer tried to get his attention by touching his arm
Denzel Washington, visibly upset, shook off the photographer's and firmly asked him to stop his behaviour: "Stop, stop!"
This incident in Cannes is not an isolated incident in Denzel Washington's career. In October 2024, during an event at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the actor had a tense exchange with paparazzi and fans seeking autographs
Although initially cordial, the situation became uncomfortable when some attendees crossed some boundaries, which led Washington to remind them of the importance of respect and patience.
These episodes reflect Denzel Washington's firm stance on his personal space and the need to maintain clear boundaries, even in public settings. Despite these tense moments, his legacy in the film industry remains unquestionable, as evidenced by the recognition he received at Cannes.
Denzel Washington receives surprise honorary Palme d'Or
The American actor received an Honorary Palme d'Or on Monday, which was presented by surprise in Cannes. Washington, 70, did not know that he was going to receive this award when he appeared at the Croisette for the premiere of 'Highest 2 Lowest'.
"Spike Lee said mysteriously into the microphone, while the festival's artistic delegate Thierry Fremaux approached with a box, accompanied by the president of the event, Iris Knobloch."
"Denzel Washington is the honorary Palme d'Or," announced Fremaux, prompting a great applause and ovation from the audience.
Very excited, the actor asked the audience to sit down so he could speak, acknowledging that the tribute had taken him by surprise.
"From the bottom of my heart, thank you all (...) We are a very privileged group in this room because we can make movies and wear tuxedos and nice clothes and get paid for it. We feel blessed beyond measure, I feel blessed beyond measure," he said.
Cannes usually awards more than one honorary Palme d'Or at each edition - sometimes, as in this case, by surprise - and this year only one honoree was known, the actor Robert de Niro, who already collected the award during the opening ceremony.
