The anticipation of thousands of athletes, fans, and even casual observers is palpable as the Paris Olympics are officially inaugurated today. Over 10,000 athletes will compete in more than 300 events across 30+ disciplines. This gathering of the world's best will take place over the next two weeks, culminating in the closing ceremony on August 11.

The Olympic Torch

One of the most iconic moments of the Olympics is undoubtedly the lighting of the Olympic torch, symbolizing the continuity between the ancient and modern games. The torch is ed from person to person in a relay involving individuals from various walks of life. This year, one of the most notable torchbearers, besides Salma Hayek, was 52-year-old American rapper Snoop Dogg, who entertained the crowd with his signature "high" style, dancing and interacting with fans along the route to the cauldron in Paris.

The comments poured in on social media, with fans quipping, "Is it just because it's him carrying it that it looks like a massive blunt?" and "If he doesn't light a blunt with the torch, what are we even doing here?" Another joked, "Good thing he didn't... drop it like it's hot."

Although the identity of the final torchbearer and the exact location of the cauldron lighting remain a closely guarded secret, it has been revealed that athletes will gather on boats on the Seine River. This river, recently cleaned at a cost of 1.4 billion euros, is one of the logistical challenges the French organizers have faced. The cleanup aims to restore the river for the enjoyment of the public once the Games conclude.

More on the Olympic Torch

The Olympic flame is ignited in Olympia, Greece, several months before the Games begin. This ceremony marks the start of the Olympic torch relay, which culminates in the lighting of the Olympic cauldron during the opening ceremony. The flame remains lit in the cauldron for the duration of the Games, until it is extinguished during the closing ceremony.

A Look Forward

The wait is over, and the Olympic Games, which have already commenced with events like football, rugby sevens, and archery, promise to deliver emotional and thrilling moments as they do every four years. This edition carries additional significance, considering that the Tokyo 2020 Games were held under the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, with significant social issues ongoing in places like Palestine and Ukraine, the Olympics provide a platform for athletes to raise their voices. Let's hope these issues do not overshadow the athletic performances and that we enjoy an exceptional Games. Happy Olympics!
