Daniel Jones' career is sinking fast: now he isn't even the 3rd QB on the Giants' roster

Daniel Jones' fall from grace with the New York Giants has gone from bad to downright humiliating. The once-promising quarterback, now in his sixth season, has hit rock bottom as he finds himself relegated to fourth-string status-yes, QB4. This stunning demotion comes amid the Giants' dreadful 2-8 season, and things don't look like they'll improve for Jones anytime soon.

Earlier this week, head coach Brian Daboll made the call to bench Jones following a five-game losing streak. While his performance hasn't been stellar-2,070 ing yards, eight touchdowns, seven interceptions, and a 63.3% completion rate-it's still shocking to see him plummet so far. Adding to the sting, Daboll decided to place newly signed Tim Boyle above Jones on the depth chart.

If you're scratching your head about Boyle, you're not alone. The 30-year-old journeyman has bounced around six NFL teams since 2019 and boasts a less-than-stellar record, including going 0-2 with the Jets and throwing one touchdown against four interceptions. Yet, somehow, Boyle has leapfrogged Jones. On Wednesday, Jones was seen taking QB4 reps at practice-the first open to the media since his benching.

The Giants' decision appears more strategic than punitive. As Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News pointed out, the team likely wants to avoid any risk of Jones suffering an injury. Why? Because an injury extending into 2025 would trigger a whopping $23 million guarantee in his four-year, $160 million contract. Essentially, the Giants are doing everything short of shutting him down completely.

From $160m starter to fourth stringer

"By rule, the Giants can't send him home," Leonard explained. "But they can keep him off the field for team drills and avoid activating him on game days." Translation: they're sidestepping disaster while making it clear Jones is no longer part of their plans.

This marks a stunning turn for Jones, who was once hailed as the Giants' franchise quarterback. Now, it's hard to imagine him staying with the team much longer. At this point, Jones' days in New York seem numbered, and his once-bright NFL future has dimmed considerably.

Tommy DeVito, the new starter, and Drew Lock, the backup, now lead the depth chart. Meanwhile, Jones stands on the sidelines, the face of a franchise that has all but moved on.
