The years keep ing, and the subtle jabs-whether good or bad-between Bill Belichick and Tom Brady continue. They are the most successful head coach-quarterback duo in NFL history. Now, the former New England Patriots coach has revealed one of his biggest regrets from the 2018 Draft.
After that Draft, the Patriots went on to win the Super Bowl, beating the Los Angeles Rams 13-3 in a boring game. Nevertheless, if Belichick could turn back time, he would choose a different player in the first round-one who is now an NFL star with two MVP awards to his name.
Bill Belichick regrets not drafting Lamar Jackson
In that Draft's first round, Saquon Barkley was selected-now the highest-paid running back in NFL history with the Philadelphia Eagles. That draft class also featured a strong group of quarterbacks: Baker Mayfield went to the Browns, Josh Allen to the Bills, and Lamar Jackson to the Baltimore Ravens. It's Jackson that Belichick now regrets ing on.
According to The Art of Winning, Belichick itted it was a huge mistake not to draft Lamar Jackson when they had the chance. With the 31st pick, the Patriots selected Georgia running back Sony Michel. The Ravens then made a trade to move up to the 32nd pick and took Lamar Jackson-the rest is history.
Sony Michel didn't do badly-he even scored the only touchdown in the 2019 Super Bowl. However, he is now retired, while Lamar Jackson is one of the NFL's brightest stars, a two-time MVP, holder of numerous records, and on track to becoming the highest-paid quarterback in league history.
Perhaps, at the time, Belichick didn't dare to take Lamar because Tom Brady was still on the team, and he didn't yet know that just a couple of years later, Brady would be gone. That's why, now, as head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels in the NCAA, Belichick is feeling deep regret.
