The Miami Dolphins have secured experienced quarterback Tyler Huntley from the Baltimore Ravens' practice squad as they face an uncertain period without their starting QB, Tua Tagovailoa.
Huntley's experience, a valuable asset for Dolphins
The move comes after Tagovailoa suffered his third concussion in three seasons, leaving Miami in urgent need of a backup to current starter Skylar Thompson.
Huntley, a 2022 Pro Bowl selection, brings four years of NFL experience to Miami, having spent his entire playing career with the Ravens.
Known for his dual-threat capabilities, Huntley has made nine starts in 20 appearances over the past four seasons.
His NFL resume includes 1,957 ing yards, eight touchdown es, and seven interceptions, along with 509 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.
While his numbers may not jump off the page, his time filling in for Ravens starter Lamar Jackson has proven him to be a serviceable backup with the ability to stabilize an offense.
Miami's quarterback situation took a difficult turn when Tagovailoa's concussion left his future on the field in question.
While reports have varied on whether Tagovailoa is considering retirement, there's no clear timetable for his return, leaving the Dolphins with Thompson and now Huntley as their primary options.
Thompson, a second-year quarterback, will start in the Dolphins' matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, but Huntley's arrival provides much-needed depth.
What is Tyler Huntley's background?
Huntley's NFL journey began as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Utah in 2020, where he quickly found a place behind Lamar Jackson.
In 2022, Huntley stepped up when Jackson went down with a season-ending injury, starting five games, including a playoff appearance.
Despite limited opportunities, Huntley's ability to manage games effectively earned him Pro Bowl recognition as a replacement QB though his selection sparked debate given his modest statistical output.
Huntley's path to Miami has been a whirlwind.
After spending the past four seasons with Baltimore, Huntley signed with the Cleveland Browns in March 2024 but was released before the regular season began.
He reed the Ravens on their practice squad before being scooped up by Miami this week.
Huntley will be tasked with learning head coach Mike McDaniel's complex offensive scheme in a short period of time.
Given Tagovailoa's indefinite absence, the 26-year-old could be called upon sooner rather than later, should Thompson struggle or suffer an injury.
