The Kansas City Chiefs are set to have a relaxing weekend. While the six other AFC playoff teams battle it out for a chance to advance to the Divisional Round, the Chiefs will be watching from home. Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Andy Reid and the rest of the crew earned the right to rest by going 15-2 during the regular season.
Once again, they are set up for a deep run in the playoffs. But as they prepare for the opportunity to accomplish the elusive three-peat, their future has come under question. Thankfully, Mahomes isn't going anywhere anytime soon, but Reid's coaching staff could be set for a shakeup this offseason. That's because the team's offensive and defensive coordinators, Matt Nagy and Steve Spagnuolo, are serious candidates for other head coach openings.
Steve Spagnuolo looks likely to get a head coach job
The front office could see some movement as well, as assistant GM Mike Borgonzi has a real chance to leave for a GM position elsewhere. But losing both coordinators would be brutal for the team's continuity. Losing Spagnuolo, in particular, would really alter the course of next season, though.
Mahomes himself will tell you that the last two seasons have been underwhelming by his lofty standards. He hasn't sured 27 touchdowns in either season while throwing 25 interceptions across both seasons. The Chiefs have had no problems winning, though, because their defense has been stellar.
Spagnuolo has been the biggest reason for that. Taking away a coach of his caliber would see the defense regress, possibly heavily. If the offense continues to perform at a league average level, having an average to below average defense without Spagnuolo would be detrimental to their success.
