Sunday was another exciting day for the Kansas City Chiefs. Going up against their fierce rivals, the Cincinnati Bengals, Patrick Mahomes and co. came out victorious, although not without some controversy. Despite what everyone opines about the ending, the Chiefs are 2-0 and off to a great start in their title defense.
But injuries, particularly on offense, are threatening to derail it. First, Marquise Brown was lost for the entire regular season. On Sunday, Isiah Pacheco fractured his fibula, knocking him out for a reported six weeks or more. With Pacheco down, other players will have to step up, and head coach Andy Reid knows it.
Is Carson Steele set to start for Chiefs at RB?
Following the game, Reid spoke about the Pacheco injury and challenged his other running backs; as well as GM Brett Veach, who will be tasked with finding depth at the position in free agency or through another team's practice squad.
We'll go with the guys that we have here for now. Veach is going through his lists and looking at people. We'll just see where that goes... I have confidence in [our running backs]. I just haven't experienced it with them. [Carson Steele] likes to be challenged. This will be a good challenge for him. He needs to keep the ball high and tight. He had the fumble yesterday. He doesn't have a history of that. He has to learn from it.
Carson Steele is apparently the next man up at running back. The undrafted rookie has made a great first impression with the coaching staff, and they even kept giving him the ball despite him fumbling on Sunday.
It sounds like he will be the starter going forward, but Samaje Perine is a veteran and filled in irably for Joe Mixon whenever he was out of games while with the Bengals. Keaontay Ingram, formerly of the Arizona Cardinals, is also on the roster.
The team also brought in former Chief Kareem Hunt for a visit on Monday. Hunt was with the Cleveland Browns for the last five seasons. Reid is familiar with him, as Hunt made the Pro Bowl under Reid during his rookie season in Kansas City.
