In a stunning victory against his former team, Malik Willis led the Green Bay Packers to a commanding 30-14 win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, a game that solidified his place within the Packers' roster.
The former Titans quarterback, who was traded to Green Bay just under a month ago, took center stage in Nashville, completing 13 of 19 es for 202 yards and one touchdown.
Malik Willis impressed by Packers' defense
Despite his impressive performance, Willis was quick to deflect credit, instead heaping praise on the Packers' defense, which recorded eight sacks against Titans quarterback Will Levis.
"Oh my goodness, that was crazy - eight sacks, right? Oh my goodness, that was super,"Willis exclaimed.
"I mean, they won the game for us. The guys did great; everybody deserves it. I will pay any how much money in my pocket there, so they keep doing that. I'll add to their salaries."
Willis' lighthearted offer to sacrifice his paycheck may have been a joke, but it showed the immense respect he has for his defensive teammates, who dominated the game from start to finish.
For the Packers, the defensive display was a standout, as it marked the first time since 2005 that the team ed eight sacks in a game.
Willis focused on helping Packers win
While Willis avoided calling the matchup a "revenge game," the narrative was hard to ignore.
Just weeks ago, he was wearing Titans blue before being traded to the Packers in exchange for a seventh-round pick.
But for Willis, Sunday's win was simply another day at the office.
"I think all wins count the same," he said post-game, downplaying any notion of extra satisfaction from defeating his former team.
His teammates, however, seemed to feel otherwise.
Wide receiver Christian Watson, who had two catches for 67 yards, made it clear that he was playing with extra motivation for Willis.
"I don't care if he doesn't think it's a revenge game,"Watson said.
"I want him to be able to go out there and win this thing considering his situation."
Packers head coach Matt LaFleur was equally effusive in his praise for Willis, who stepped into the starting role after Jordan Love went down with a knee injury earlier in the season.
"I just cannot articulate the job that he's done in this short period of time. People can't fathom it,"LaFleur remarked.
"What he's been able to do, I've never seen something like this."
Under Willis' leadership, the Packers have now secured back-to-back wins, following their earlier victory against the Colts.
With Love's return still uncertain, Willis may continue to lead the team, and his presence has already sparked a noticeable emotional boost in the Packers' locker room.
