The Dallas Cowboys surprised everyone on Wednesday by acquiring 24-year-old wide receiver George Pickens in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The move will bolster the offense led by Dak Prescott, who will now have another reliable target alongside CeeDee Lamb.
The hiring of Jerry Jones was endorsed by former Cowboys wide receiver and Hall of Famer Michael Irvin, who is often outspoken in his opinions about the Lone Star and during a recent appearance on Fox Sports' Speak FS1, he felt that his arrival could be the spark that the Cowboys offense needs.
"The only thing that matters is that we have the exact type of receiver, the exact diversity that I talked about. He's an exceptional athlete. He's a phenomenon. He can make plays that very few players with shoulder pads and a helmet can make. If you add to that what the Dallas Cowboys have right now. We're back in the fight," said Michael Irvin.
In the deal for Pickens, the Cowboys will receive a sixth-round draft pick in 2026 in exchange for a third-round pick in 2026 and a fifth-round pick in 2027
George Pickens' numbers with the Steelers
George Pickens has proven to be one of the most explosive receivers in the NFL, although his performance depends largely on his focus on the field. In 2023, he led the league with an average of 18.1 yards per reception and, in 48 games played, he has 174 receptions, 2,841 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Selected in the second round of the 2022 Draft, Pickens is about to enter the final year of his rookie contract with the Steelers. At 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, he has been a productive yet unpredictable figure in his first three seasons. He has sured 800 yards in each, mixing spectacular plays with episodes of immaturity. His best campaign was in 2023, with 1,140 yards and eight touchdowns.
That lack of consistency has been a key factor for the Steelers, who showed no intention of renewing his contract and in March completed the g of DK Metcalf, a two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver, on a five-year deal, leaving Pickens in a secondary position.
