The Dallas Cowboys may have Dak Prescott locked in as their franchise quarterback for the next four seasons, but behind the scenes, the team is already planning for the future. With the QB room filled with uncertainty, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones has confirmed that the team is eyeing a young quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft.
"You know, I think one of our goals is to get a young quarterback in the draft," Jones revealed in an interview with The Dallas Morning News. "I don't know where that's going to be."
With Prescott recovering from season-ending hamstring surgery, backups Cooper Rush and Trey Lance stepped up in his absence. Rush started eight games, while Lance took the reins in the Week 18 finale. However, both quarterbacks are set to hit free agency, leaving the Cowboys in need of reinforcements at the position.
Lance and Rush are likely goners
The biggest question mark is Lance, whom Dallas acquired from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a fourth-round pick last year. Despite the investment, the Cowboys appear ready to move on.
"That's why we gave a [fourth-round pick] for Trey," Jones itted. "It seems like all the quarterbacks, even guys we have in the fourth round, go in the first. They always go so much higher than what you think."
Rush, on the other hand, remains a valued piece of the puzzle. But with Prescott carrying the NFL's highest quarterback salary, Jones acknowledged that financial constraints could make it difficult to retain him.
"You know how much we think of Cooper," Jones said. "We just don't know what he's going to cost. When we're paying Dak what we're paying him, unfortunately, we do have to go cheap there."
Schottenheimer also wants new blood at QB
New Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer and quarterbacks coach Steve Shimko have also emphasized their desire to bring in a young quarterback to develop. The Cowboys currently hold the No. 12 overall pick in the first round of the draft, but according to the latest mock drafts, they are projected to select Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty.
That means Dallas will likely target a quarterback in the later rounds, but with QB prospects often ri draft boards unexpectedly, Jones and the Cowboys' front office will have to act fast if they find a promising talent.
