Michael Irvin's ion for the Dallas Cowboys is second to none. Arguably the franchise's most iconic wide receiver, Irvin was a three-time Super Bowl champion in his day and continues to cheer on the Cowboys...but Dallas owner Jerry Jones is making it harder and harder for Irvin to maintain his jovial disposition.

Jones' decision to hire Brian Schottenheimer over Deion Sanders (and other candidates) as the Cowboys' new head coach has been met with derision, as Dallas hired a candidate with no head coaching experience to oversee a talented but flawed roster. As the Cowboys' Super Bowl drought threatens to extend to 30 years in 2025, Irvin is issuing a warning that could spook those in the organization.

Irvin portends Dallas doom without divine intervention

During a visit to New Orleans to watch Super Bowl LIX, Irvin went off on the Cowboys' Schottenheimer decision, as the veteran assistant takes over from Mike McCarthy in an effort to lead Dallas to its first conference championship game since 1995. Irvin said there are "great odds against" Schottenheimer turning the Cowboys' fortunes around after Dallas limped to a 7-10 season in 2024 amid injuries to star players Dak Prescott, Micah Parsons, CeeDee Lamb, and Trevon Diggs.

"When He takes a Brian Schottenheimer, the least likely of them all, and then He gives him that position, and He does something great, you yourself will say it must've been God, because we damn well know it wasn't Brian Schottenheimer!" Irvin said, according to TMZ Sports.

As of Feb. 13, the Cowboys are nearly $3 million over the salary cap and face a difficult road ahead to improving their team for 2025. Dallas holds the #12 pick in what is considered a deep NFL Draft, and mock drafts routinely have the Cowboys selecting Boise State's star running back Ashton Jeanty in the first round, which would provide a clear and cheap upgrade in the backfield. It would be a start, and the Jeanty pick would probably meet with Irvin's approval -- as would the rumored acquisition of Cincinnati Bengals receiver Tee Higgins.
