It is obvious that things are not going great in Dallas this season. The Cowboys sit 3-4 amid a string of concerning performances, as the team's weaknesses seem to remain unaddressed even after a recent bye week.
Following a 30-24 loss to the reigning NFC champion San Francisco 49ers, the Cowboys are teetering ever closer to the edge and are in danger of missing the NFL playoffs. Self-criticism and reflection is needed in Dallas if embattled head coach Mike McCarthy is going to guide the Cowboys into the postseason for the fourth year running.
Dalvin Cook sounds off: Games have been getting out of hand
Veteran running back Dalvin Cook was elevated from the practice squad and made his Cowboys debut at Levi's Stadium on Sunday. That allowed the four-time Pro Bowl selection to see, first-hand, what has given Dallas the most trouble this season: the running game.
"We work our tails off here, and some games been getting out of hand. We ain't really had the bats to the plate to show what this running back room could do," Cook said, according to Athlon Sports. "We got some special talents in the room, we just got to keep getting more opportunities to show that we got a good group out here."
Cook carried the ball six times for 12 yards against San Francisco, which outgained Dallas 469-292 in a game that was not as close as the final score suggested. The Cowboys -- who lost 47-9 to the Detroit Lions two weeks earlier -- reportedly envisioned Cook as an RB1, hoping to get him up to speed quickly and turning him loose. Instead, the 49ers loss left the Cowboys with more questions to answer as their defense continues to struggle and their running back rotation remains the NFL's least-efficient group.
Still, with 10 games to go, Dallas can still go on a run and take advantage of four remaining NFC East matchups with the two teams above them: the Washington Commanders (6-2) and the Philadelphia Eagles (5-2). But the clock is ticking -- time is running out for the talent that Cook sees to show up and play like it each week.
