Despite being named Coach of the Year twice, in 2020 and 2023, the results from the 2024 season could put Kevin Stefanski's job as Head Coach of the Cleveland Browns in jeopardy. If Shedeur Sanders remains with the franchise, Deion Sanders himself could be a candidate to take over the position if Stefanski is let go.
It wouldn't be surprising if the Cleveland Browns made yet another one of the poor decisions that have marked their history-firing a coach like Stefanski, who has proven his value with major achievements such as the team's first playoff win in 26 years (2020) and turning the Browns into a competitive team.
Jimmy Haslam, owner of the Browns, has made questionable decisions in recent years-such as giving $230 million guaranteed to Deshaun Watson, who has turned out to be a disaster. Now, with someone as media-driven as Sanders around, no one really knows what might happen with the team.
Kevin Stefanski will be under intense pressure
After Shedeur Sanders surprisingly plummeted in the recent NFL Draft-despite being seen as a first-round talent-various conspiracy theories emerged. One of them suggested teams didn't want the off-field noise and media attention that someone like Sanders brings.
The concern is that if things start going badly within the franchise, both the general manager and head coach could be at risk-making Deion Sanders the top candidate to take over. This, according to reports, is the scenario unfolding within the Cleveland Browns.
Ben Solak, an analyst at ESPN, noted that Kevin Stefanski is one of the coaches to keep an eye on this NFL season:
"I have no idea what the expectations are for Stefanski this season, but the team went 3-14 last year, and another three-win season wouldn't surprise me at all. I say this with full conviction: Stefanski looks like an excellent option as a veteran offensive coordinator if the Browns decide to clean house. He's gotten the best out of a constantly changing quarterback room and managed significant offensive injuries over the past two seasons," wrote Solak.
Now the pressure is on Stefanski-especially when it comes to who will start at quarterback for the Browns: whether it's Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, or Shedeur Sanders. The head coach certainly has a lot on his shoulders.
And if the Browns make yet another mistake by firing Stefanski after a slump or poor season, there's no doubt he would be a highly sought-after head coach candidate elsewhere in the NFL.
