President Donald Trump has faced widespread criticism over his appearance at the funeral of Pope Francis, held in Rome on April 26, for wearing a blue suit and opting against the respectful black attire.
The service drew a host of international dignitaries, including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Prince William, who ed over 50 heads of state and 12 reigning monarchs in mourning the late pontiff and chose black as the color of mourning.
But Trump's choice of clothing stood out for all the wrong reasons as he wore his usual blue suit; despite nearly all attendees, including Melania, donning black at the Santa Maria Maggiore, as the First Lady of the United States even wore a veil.
Observers were quick to voice their disapproval. Many noted the stark contrast between Trump and his wife as they headed to X.com, formerly known as Twitter, to weigh in on the POTUS' latest controversy.
One wrote, "Why isn't Trump wearing a black suit? Such disrespect."
Another commented, "Respect? He's not even wearing a black suit. At least Melania is attending the funeral in all black including a modest black veil. Wishing a real bad sunburn on his bald combover."
A third questioned, "Who wears a blue suit to a funeral?"
And a fourth commenter added, "What is it with Trump that he did not even have the decency to wear a black tie, never mind he wore a blue suit."
Though the Vatican did not issue any formal response to the incident, protocol for papal funerals traditionally favors subdued, respectful dress in black or dark gray, particularly for heads of state and public figures.
Trump's decision not to follow this custom has reignited debates over his regard for diplomatic norms and ceremonial conduct, this time for the person considered to be the holiest person in Catholicism.
