Prince William made a solemn appearance at the Vatican this weekend, ing world leaders, fellow royals, and senior of the Catholic Church for the funeral of Pope Francis.

The Prince of Wales, 42, traveled to Rome without his wife, Kate Middleton, to attend the service on behalf of his father, King Charles III, who remains absent from public duties due to his ongoing cancer treatment.

Wearing a blue suit and black tie, William was seen arriving at St. Peter's Square, where he is expected to sit among other royal guests including the King and Queen of Sweden and the Crown Prince and Princess of Norway.

Political figures such as President Trump will occupy the front rows alongside prominent clergy, including bishops and cardinals.

Kensington Palace confirmed earlier in the week that William would be attending the service, stepping in for King Charles as his health challenges continue.

Although the Palace did not explicitly state that illness was the reason for Charles' absence, his reduced schedule over the past year suggests it may have been a factor.

Prince William steps up for the royal family

The Prince's presence at Pope Francis' funeral comes just two weeks after King Charles and Queen Camilla made a significant visit to the Vatican.

On April 9, during their state visit to Italy, the royal couple had a private 20-minute audience with the Pope.

During the meeting, Charles told Pope Francis that he and Camilla were praying for his recovery from pneumonia, while the Pope assured the King that he was keeping him in his prayers as well.

Palace officials described the encounter as a "very significant and special moment," especially as it coincided with the King and Queen's 20th wedding anniversary.

Pope Francis ed away early Monday at the age of 88 after suffering a stroke, just a day after greeting Easter crowds at St. Peter's Square.

His death came shortly after he had received a visit from U.S. Vice President JD Vance at his residence, Casa Santa Marta.

Despite his recent health battles, Pope Francis had appeared in public, delighting thousands of worshippers who cheered, "Viva il Papa" - meaning "Long live the Pope."

Following the announcement of his death, King Charles issued a heartfelt statement mourning the "devastating loss" and ordered all royal residences to lower their flags to half-staff.

For Prince William, after attending the service at the Vatican, his schedule turns to more personal matters. Next week, he and Kate Middleton are expected to travel to a remote Scottish island to celebrate their 14th wedding anniversary.

Their planned trip on April 29 and 30 will carry extra significance as it was in Scotland, at the University of St. Andrews, where the royal couple first met.
