Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday, Ben Affleck opened up about just how blunt his three kids-Violet, 19, Seraphina, 16, and Samuel, 13, whom he shares with ex-wife Jennifer Garner-can be when it comes to his work.
"They don't censor their criticism," Affleck said, clearly amused. "They'll sit right next to me watching a movie and while it's happening [say], 'This is terrible. I mean, this is terrible. Why did you do this?'"
And it's not just off-the-cuff remarks. According to Affleck, his kids come ready to dissect plot points in real time-no waiting until the credits roll.
'Armageddon' took the brunt of the roasting
When host Jimmy Kimmel asked if there was a particular film that got especially harsh treatment, Affleck recalled an infamous pandemic-era movie night involving his 1998 disaster film Armageddon.
"All the kids were in the house [during quarantine] and I was like, 'Hey, let's watch a movie,'" Affleck said. "Almost immediately, it was like, 'What? What is this? ... Are you kidding me?'"
His son Samuel, then just a tween, was apparently particularly unimpressed.
"My son was like, 'This doesn't make sense,'" Affleck shared. "[I replied], 'This is not a logic-based film! That is not one of the criteria we used making this!'"
Despite the hilariously brutal honesty, Affleck doesn't seem to take it personally-though he joked that they could at least wait until the end before tearing his work apart.
Affleck, whose latest film premieres Friday, said he was caught off guard when the kids actually gave him a rare compliment.
"They liked it," he said, though he itted he was skeptical. "I was like, 'What? You really liked it?' They're like, 'Yeah, it was good.' They were shocked as if I got lucky, like this magical accident happened and something I did was OK!"
