The recent arrest of Sean "Diddy" Combs has sent shockwaves through the hip-hop community. Even though Combs has been under significant scrutiny and attracted the attention of federal authorities, the 54-year-old Bad Boy Records founder was not quite as invulnerable as he had intimated following his arrest Monday.
While Combs is in custody after his legal team's bail request was rejected, the mogul's hip-hop empire faces the risk of collapse while the "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down" rapper is indeed being held down by the legal system. Diddy's lawyers though are insisting that he is eager to clear his name in court -- and he is allegedly taking this opportunity to turn over a new leaf.
Combs has entered "treatment and therapy"
According to Diddy's attorney Marc Agnifilo, the "Mo' Money Mo' Problems" rapper was preparing for his arrest in New York earlier this week and had arrived in the bustling city to undergo treatment and therapy amid claims that Diddy oversaw a criminal empire that included sex trafficking and sexual assault in the form of wild orgies -- that allegedly also included heavy recreational drug usage.
"Mr. Combs is not a perfect person," Agnifilo said. "There's been drug use, there's been toxic relationships -- which I think were mutual in their toxicity as these things often are."
Agnifilo further said that Diddy should be applauded for entering therapy at the age of 54, but he is unlikely to find much goodwill or the benefit of the doubt -- certainly not after a resurfaced video showed Diddy beating ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura in Los Angeles eight years ago. While Diddy settled with Ventura out of court shortly after the video was released, the damage to his reputation had been done -- with some convicting him in the court of public opinion.
It remains to be seen whether Diddy will benefit from his therapy, or treatment for various alleged addictions. But the saga is set to continue one way or another, given the breadth of the charges that have been unsealed against him.
