Manchester City celebrated becoming 2022/23 Premier League champions with a simple 1-0 win over Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon, all thanks to a Julian Alvarez goal.

The celebrations started well before kick off in Manchester as City were gifted the Premier League title following Arsenal's loss to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, making it five titles in six season for Pep Guardiola and the Citizens.

With neither City not Chelsea having anything to play for, the match at the Etihad wasn't played at the intensity you'd expect from to of English football's juggernauts. City made a raft of changes and one of those - Julian Alvarez for Erling Haaland - made his mark just 12 minutes in.

Poor defending from Chelsea saw Cole Palmer pick up the ball and expertly pick out Alvarez to open the scoring.

Poor from Chelsea

There was little response from Frank Lampard's men, who seemed to be strolling about the pitch more often than not, and though City had 70 percent possession in the opening 20 minutes, they couldn't add to that advantage.

The celebratory mood was prevalent in Manchester with the City fans breaking out their 'Poznan' celebration before the half hour mark.

It was almost two when Kalvin Phillips found Phil Foden with an expert ball over the top and the latter's attempted lob over Kepa was just wide of the top corner.

Stefan Ortega did have to make a smart save on Raheem Sterling, before Conor Gallagher headed against the post, as Chelsea had a good spell before half time.

Open second half

The match was a lot more open after the break, and it was Kalvin Phillips' turn to hit the post, as he headed off the woodwork from a set piece.

Riyad Mahrez did have the ball in the back of the net but it was ruled out for a foul in the build up, then Alvarez got his second, but again it was disallowed by VAR for a handball.

Moments after coming on as a substitute Haaland dragged an effort across goal, before Mykhailo Mudryk had a great chance to level for Chelsea but struck wildly over bar.
