- Gaming. Neither Kirby nor Donkey Kong: the Nintendo character who surprised with his own revolutionary game
- Gaming. The data says Nintendo will eat Xbox and PlayStation, but... what if the future is something else?
Although we still have no news about GTA 6, Rockstar's game is still on everyone's lips. Still scheduled for summer 2025, it is still giving a lot to talk about. The rumors do not stop and there are those who say that the absence of that second trailer is synonymous with an unannounced delay.
To be honest, the issue is tiring, so today I preferred to talk about something quite different: the worst enemy of GTA 6 is its own creators. And I don't mean that in a bad way, as it's quite the opposite.
Recently, I explained that Rockstar created one of the best open-world maps 17 years ago with Grand Theft Auto 4. Unfortunately, many of its virtues were lost in GTA 5. See, for example, that curious dynamic whereby any paramedic can revive an NPC in the middle of the street after attending to them from their ambulance.
These kinds of details are what make a game a great game. GTA 5 also had many things like this, which is one of the reasons why it is considered one of Rockstar's best releases.
However, it did forget about other details present in previous installments that we still miss today. I have mentioned the paramedics, but we can also talk about the subway lines without loading times, for example.
Rockstar has been doing almost everything right for years and this is why I think they are their own worst enemy; when you get someone used to the good stuff, they will always end up asking for more, but you can't always deliver.
Rockstar is so good at what it does that it's impossible not to expect the best from them and GTA 6
After so many years of flirting with excellence, it is almost impossible not to ask for more and more. But can GTA 6 live up to all those expectations? And I'm not talking about the gameplay or the map. Honestly, I don't expect the new Grand Theft Auto to have a too revolutionary gameplay.
Technically, it will be more polished, have thousands of quirks and be crazy. I have no doubt about that. What I don't know is whether it will be able to maintain those standards to which we are accustomed by increasing the graphical load, for example.
If there's one thing that's been said, it's that it will be its best game on a visual level. If it does this, rendering all the information will require more effort from the console. This is what makes me think that it could sacrifice aspects such as those mentioned above. In other words, the world might feel less alive without us realising it.
In GTA 5, we lost the paramedics in ambulances and the police examining random NPC cars if they thought they were suspicious. That is to say, not so much importance was given to world interactions and NPCs.
GTA 5 dispensed with certain details, will it be repeated in Grand Theft Auto 6?
All that said, I don't think it's just Rockstar's fault. We are very prone to imagining the impossible and setting unrealistic standards; we expect everything to be perfect and every game to be a revolution when it can't always be that way.
I also have reason to trust that this will not be the case. RDR2 did not need to do so, as it gave us a really good game in almost every aspect. Moreover, its world feels so alive and so real that it continues to surprise us in 2025.
This is what makes me think that Rockstar is its own worst enemy and at the same time its best ally. They are so good that they have us very spoiled, but they are so good that they are able to satisfy even the most unrealistic demands.
I trust Rockstar blindly, but...
I don't want to go on too much longer, so I'll leave you with a question: What do you expect from GTA 6? Do you think it will live up to the very high expectations that have been imposed on it or that it will simply be a great game, but not one as exaggeratedly good as everyone thinks?
When I think about their track record, I choose to have faith. Or in other words, I want to believe that they will be able to give us a world as alive as that of GTA 4 or RDR2 and with an even more spectacular, dynamic and striking finish than that of GTA 5. If anyone can do it, it's them.
