Apple has warned customers they will have to wait longer for its iPhone 14 models, citing strict COVID-19 restrictions in China as a big reason why.

The tech giant say that the Foxconn-operated factory, in the central city of Zhengzhou, is operating at significantly reduced capacity, but did not give details on how much its workforce has been reduced.

"We continue to see strong demand for iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models," read a statement.

"However, we now expect lower iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max shipments than we previously anticipated and customers will experience longer wait times to receive their new products."

How long will the delay in iPhone shipments be?

Apple, which began selling its iPhone 14 in September, says customers should expect delays of up to a month, although they did not give a solid timeline.

Last week, Chinese authorities ordered a seven-day lockdown in the area around the Foxconn factory after a spike in COVID infections in Zhengzhou and workers at the plant.

The factory, which employs around 200,000 people, has been affected by the strict measures to curb the spread of COVID-19. China reported its highest number of new COVID-19 infections in six months last Monday.

Meanwhile, Apple expects to produce at least three million fewer iPhone 14 phones this year than planned, due to weak demand for their low-end models.
