Currently, discussions are ongoing between the San Francisco 49ers' front office and Brock Purdy in hopes of reaching a new agreement - a situation that has sparked division of opinions. Purdy's agents are seeking a contract worth over $50 million per season, something that could jeopardize the franchise's future success.
Last season, the 49ers had a year to forget. After reaching the Super Bowl, the team missed the playoffs and finished last in the NFC West. While not everything was Brock Purdy's fault, he did have several critical mistakes in decisive moments, leading to significant controversy surrounding the new deal that may soon be finalized.
As a precaution, during the offseason, the 49ers signed quarterback Mac Jones, who came over from the Jacksonville Jaguars and was originally a first-round pick in the 2021 draft by the New England Patriots. Jones has long been a favorite of the team's head coach, Kyle Shanahan.
The 49ers drafted a new QB
Brock Purdy was selected at the end of the seventh round in 2021, and now the 49ers have repeated that same approach. This year, in the 2025 draft, the team selected Kurtis Rourke from Indiana in the seventh round.
Rourke finished his college career playing with a torn ACL. Despite the injury, he wore a large brace on his right knee and managed to play 12 games, leading Indiana to its most successful season in 126 years of history, even securing a spot in the College Football Playoff.
"We were in a situation where we could afford to select him, and honestly, I think he would have been drafted much earlier if he had been healthy," said head coach Kyle Shanahan.
"We drafted him knowing he probably won't be ready until training camp," explained general manager John Lynch. "But we saw a lot of talent, a lot of potential. He plays the position the right way. You can never have too many good quarterbacks, and we're happy we were able to get him in the seventh round."
Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 220 pounds, Rourke ed for 3,042 yards, 29 touchdowns, and just five interceptions.
