The echoes of the 2025 NFL Draft continue, especially surrounding the now-quarterback of the Cleveland Browns, Shedeur Sanders, who undoubtedly drew all the attention after an impressive downfall. After being considered a first-round talent based on his stats and quality, he ended up being selected on the third day with the 144th overall pick.
On paper, the New York Giants were one of the teams keeping an eye on Shedeur Sanders. Since last year, it was known the Giants would need a quarterback following the departure of Daniel Jones. Insiders and fans of the team considered the former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback a strong candidate to become the new face of New York.
But in mid-March of this year, the Giants drastically changed direction. First, it was leaked that their main target was Cam Ward, but moving up to the top pick would have been extremely costly. Then they were favorites to go after Travis Hunter, but ultimately, they made the right decision and selected the best defensive player in the Draft: edge rusher Abdul Carter from Penn State.
Shedeur didn't have a good interview with the Giants and got upset with the team
The Giants had an interview with Shedeur Sanders and, according to reports, the quarterback failed it, which was one of the reasons the team ed on him. Albert Breer, an analyst at Sports Illustrated, reported that Shedeur didn't spot intentional errors in a mock playbook installation, which was part of the Giants' pre-draft interview process.
"The Giants give players an installation with intentional mistakes in it," said Breer. "He didn't catch them, they pointed it out to him, and things didn't go well after that... He got mad because they did that."
On the other hand, NFL Network analyst Ian Rapoport revealed after the NFL Draft that had Jaxson Dart not been available, the Giants might have been tempted to take Shedeur Sanders at the end of the first round.
"I think if Dart hadn't been available for the Giants, trading up in the draft for Shedeur Sanders was a very real possibility. It was something they were definitely considering," said Rapoport on NFL Network.
In the end, the Giants selected Jaxson Dart, quarterback from Ole Miss. With that pick, both GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll are staking their jobs on the decision.
