The 2023 NFL season is off to a horrendous start for the New York Giants. After making the playoffs last season under Coach of the Year Brian Daboll, the front office signed quarterback Daniel Jones to a four-year, $160 million extension in the offseason. Jones did enough in 2022 to warrant it, playing mistake-free football and being efficient through the air and ground.
So far this year, Jones is doing the exact opposite. His rushing numbers are good, but he's been one of the least effective quarterbacks in of ing. Through four games, he's tied for the NFL lead in interceptions with six, his yards per attempt is under six and he's also lost four fumbles. He's gone from a league-best 1.1 interception percentage to 4.6.
Daboll loses it with Jones' interception
On Monday night against the Seattle Seahawks, it all came to a head. The Giants only mustered three total points, while Jones threw two interceptions. The first was a terrible decision from the Seahawks five-yard line which led to a Devon Witherspoon 97-yard pick-six. The throw was so ill-advised that Daboll was visibly upset when he saw it after on the tablet.
Jones wasn't done there. He later threw another interception as the team tried to claw back into the game.
Once the game concluded, Daboll was asked about the "altercation" on the sidelines. He said he was trying to get Jones' perspective on his throwing decision. His response when asked what he wanted the quarterback to do on the play: "Obviously, not throw an interception".
At 1-3 with the team looking so inept, both Jones and Daboll might be on the hot seat going forward. Daboll should have more of a leash than Jones given the quarterback's poor play, but his contract doesn't give the team a clear out until 2025.
