The annual NFL schedule release has evolved into a showcase of creativity, where each team competes for social media glory through flashy, meme-worthy content.
This year, however, the Indianapolis Colts found themselves on the wrong side of that competition after releasing-and quickly deleting-a Minecraft-inspired video that backfired in spectacular fashion.
While teams such as the Los Angeles Chargers won praise for their clever block-themed rollout and the Chicago Bears embraced a vibrant 80s neon aesthetic, the Colts veered into murky territory.
Their video, styled as a pixelated tribute to the iconic sandbox game, included puzzling and controversial segments that left many viewers more bewildered than amused.
Among the references was a portrayal of Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray as a "chicken jockey," and a surreal wrestling ring cameo featuring Patrick Mahomes as a frog intervening in a mock fight between his father, Pat Mahomes Sr., and former MLB pitcher John Rocker.
What may have been intended as quirky humor instead felt more like a series of inside jokes that lacked broader context. The reaction from fans was swift and unforgiving, with many taking to social media to criticize the video's tone.
The phrase "Serenity now!" echoed through comment threads as Colts executives scrambled to remove the video from circulation.
Tyreek Hill portrayal ignites outrage over real-life reference
The most widely condemned segment involved Miami Dolphins star wide receiver Tyreek Hill. In the clip, Hill was represented as a pixelated dolphin being stopped by the Coast Guard en route to a game.
The animation appeared to allude to Hill's real-life run-in with law enforcement in 2024, when he was briefly detained outside Hard Rock Stadium following a traffic stop that escalated. Body camera footage later revealed officers pinning Hill to the ground.
Hill addressed the incident candidly, reflecting on how differently things could have ended.
"If I wasn't Tyreek Hill, Lord knows, I probably would have been, like, worst-case scenario, I would have been shot or would have been locked up," he said in a postgame interview.
