Stetson Bennett's NFL career hasn't started the way he or the Los Angeles Rams envisioned. Bennett was drafted 128th overall in the 4th round of the latest NFL Draft, with the hope he would back up Matthew Stafford until he could step in and possibly be a starter in the future.

Bennett was inactive for Week 1 due to a right shoulder injury. On Wednesday, the Rams placed him on the reserve/non-football injury list.

When head coach Sean McVay was asked about it, he delivered a cryptic answer that was both alarming and mysterious.

Out of respect for him and the situation, I'm going to leave all the specifics and particulars in-house. And I want to be able to do that out of respect for that situation, so I'm not going to really have any follow-up information or anything that I'll give in that regards.

McVay also said "I think there are certain things that are a lot bigger than that" when asked about how Bennett's absence affects the team's backup quarterback situation.

Many fans began to speculate on the reasoning behind the decision, with several citing his January arrest for public intoxication and deducing that he may have an alcohol problem. Despite that speculation, nothing has come to light and hopefully it's nothing serious.

What does the future hold?

Bennett was considered a polarizing prospect coming out of college, where he won the National Championship twice with Georgia. He came out as a 25-year-old, undersized quarterback who didn't have the prototypical size and traits of most ing prospects.

In his first NFL preseason, he really struggled. Pro Football Focus graded him as the worst quarterback throughout August. He threw three interceptions and only one touchdown in three games.

Until there's clarity on Bennett's situation, Brett Rypien will serve as Stafford's backup going forward.
