Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs star, still dealing with the aftermath of the hits delivered by the Philadelphia Eagles

There's no doubt that as long as Patrick Mahomes is under center for the Kansas City Chiefs, the team will always be a contender to win the Super Bowl. As of now, they are favorites to return to the NFL's big game representing the AFC.

However, it's become clear that no matter how talented Mahomes is, the quarterback will need help-especially from his offensive line-after being crushed by the Philadelphia Eagles in the last Super Bowl, where he suffered six sacks and a pair of interceptions that proved lethal for the Chiefs.

This offseason, the Chiefs lost one of their top offensive line players, All-Pro guard Joe Thuney, who was traded to the Chicago Bears for a fourth-round pick. While they've made some gs, the most notable has been offensive lineman Jaylon Moore, who came over from the San Francisco 49ers.

Chiefs looking to reach a deal with lineman Trey Smith

The team used the franchise tag on right guard Trey Smith at the start of the offseason. However, they have yet to reach a deal to extend his contract and keep him with the team long-term. Here's what Brett Veach, the Chiefs' general manager, had to say:

"We hope we can get it done," said Veach. "There's no lack of interest, willingness, or desire on our end. We had a lot of conversations during the Combine. Those talks continued during the owners' meetings... We've exchanged multiple phone calls, multiple emails. My guess is that once the draft ends and we can refocus on the players already here... I'm confident that once things settle on both sides, we'll be able to resume this dialogue and hopefully make progress."

Smith has already signed the franchise tag, so he'll earn $23.4 million for the season, but the clear goal is to secure an extension and continue protecting Patrick Mahomes.

On another note, Veach also mentioned that the Chiefs have been evaluating several offensive linemen in the Draft and could bolster Mahomes' protection through that route.
