The fallout continues from the Kansas City Chiefs' shocking loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX. The Chiefs fell behind early and trailed by as many as 34 points before mounting a late rally that made the final 40-22 score appear more respectable -- but make no mistake, Kansas City was very much second-best at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
After seeing their dreams of a first-ever NFL three-peat dashed so mercilessly, many around the NFL wonder what the Chiefs' next steps will be. Kansas City faces a salary cap crunch this offseason, and star tight end Travis Kelce is mulling retirement after 12 stellar seasons. Patrick Mahomes could have a very different ing cast when the 2025 season begins -- which, strangely enough, might elicit further comparisons to NFL legend Tom Brady.
Chiefs "expected" to have Super Bowl hangover
While Brady and the New England Patriots won six Super Bowls together between 2001 and 2019, fans sometimes forget that Brady went nine years (2008 to 2017) in between Super Bowl appearances...without significant damage being done to his legacy. According to a "bold prediction" from Sports Illustrated, Mahomes too may have to "take a break" after winning three Super Bowls over the past six seasons, as rivals like the Buffalo Bills and the Baltimore Ravens get closer to breaking through in the AFC.
"The Chiefs will miss the Super Bowl next season, and each of the next two seasons," Conner Orr wrote for SI. "The Patriots had several gaps between Super Bowls amid their two-decade dynasty, and so will Kansas City."
Even though the Chiefs are early co-favorites to win Super Bowl LX, Kansas City could easily find out what New England did before them: it is tough to keep together a good team of players in their prime, especially when salary cap constraints come into consideration.
The Chiefs could get creative this offseason, especially if Kelce retires, in their continued pursuit of top talent. But it should be ed that what Kansas City just did -- reaching the Super Bowl three years in a row -- doesn't happen often, and the Chiefs will be hard-pressed to get to Levi's Stadium and play in that game to conclude the 2025 season, too.
