Over the past seven seasons, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has seen quarterback Patrick Mahomes do some pretty incredible things. In his first full season as the starter, back in 2018, Mahomes swept the NFL MVP and Offensive Player of the Year awards; the following season, he led the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl crown in 50 years. Two more Super Bowl titles followed, in 2022 and 2023, with Kansas City now striving to become the NFL's first team to win the Super Bowl in three straight years.
But Reid was even more candid than usual on Saturday, when Mahomes and Travis Kelce steered the Chiefs back to the conference championship game with a 23-14 win over the Houston Texans. The victory at Arrowhead Stadium did not just impress Taylor Swift and Caitlin Clark -- the 66-year-old Reid had to spill the beans on the "unreal" play from his superstar quarterback.

Reid could not believe Mahomes' falling TD
In a moment that instantly became a part of Chiefs lore, Mahomes threw a touchdown to Kelce while being tackled by Texans defensive lineman Mario Edwards Jr. on a third-and-goal play early in the fourth quarter. The touchdown gave Kansas City the breathing room it needed; its 20-12 lead thanks to the acrobatic touchdown proved insurmountable.
For Reid, the was another in a long list of scarcely-believable moments that Mahomes has conjured throughout this dynastic run, and it only adds to the two-time MVP's legendary status in Kansas City.
"I always tell our coaches -- don't get used to that. This is unreal," Reid told reporters on Saturday. "I tell the fans the same thing. We're very lucky to have him here. The stuff he's doing doesn't happen. That's why he's the greatest at doing what he's done."
Mahomes now has guided the Chiefs to seven consecutive AFC championship games, but he wanted to give Kelce the credit for that acrobatic touchdown -- a moment that offers a glimpse into the three-time Super Bowl MVP's leadership style. After all, Kelce was just as important to Kansas City's win on Saturday -- he had his best game all season, hauling in seven es for 117 yards.
"You find a way in those big moments, and that was a big moment," Mahomes said after the game. "I was glad that Trav was in that spot where I was able to get him the football."
