Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes offered reassurance to fans and teammates after a "scary" moment during Monday Night Football, where he appeared to re-aggravate his ankle injury.

Despite being visibly in pain, Mahomes powered through to help lead his team to a dramatic 30-24 overtime victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Arrowhead Stadium, preserving the Chiefs' undefeated 8-0 record.

Mahomes, known for his resilience, initially injured the same ankle in the previous week, making Monday night's incident even more concerning.

The injury occurred during a crucial play in the fourth quarter as Mahomes threw a to running back Samaje Perine. Without from an opposing player, Mahomes twisted his ankle, causing immediate pain.

Reflecting on the incident, Mahomes said, "Definitely scary. I think it hurt more, just because it's the same ankle I rolled last week.

"So, it scared me a little bit." However, he added that after taking a moment to calm down, he was able to manage the pain.

"We went in there, got a re-spat and went back on the football field. You feel the pain, and that scares you," he itted.

The Chiefs' medical staff and head coach Andy Reid showed initial hesitation to let Mahomes back in the game, preferring caution with their franchise quarterback.

Reid considered putting backup quarterback Carson Wentz into the game to avoid further risk.

However, Mahomes, adamant about his readiness, was seen arguing with trainers on the sideline.

"I was trying to run off the field and they were telling me not to," Mahomes explained. "It's just kind of the football mentality... He [Reid] said it, and I was like, 'Come on. We're not doing this.'"

Ultimately, Mahomes' determination to stay in the game prevailed, and he led the Chiefs through overtime to secure the victory.

Chiefs fans have grown accustomed to Mahomes' drive and refusal to back down, but the sight of him limping was a reminder of the physical toll of each game.

As the team remains the only undefeated squad in the NFL, they'll need their star quarterback healthy for the long season ahead.

Looking ahead to the Broncos game

With just days until the Chiefs face the Denver Broncos on Sunday, Mahomes' injury status will be closely watched.

Although the 29-year-old appeared on the injury report for the first time this season last week, he is optimistic about playing.

The Chiefs' medical team and coaching staff will continue to monitor him throughout the week to determine if additional precautions are needed.

For Mahomes, however, the outlook is straightforward. "I expect to play," he said confidently, signaling to fans that, once again, he is ready to lead his team and continue the Chiefs' impressive season.
