Kareem Hunt is making his way back to Kansas City, and it's stirring up quite a buzz. With starting running back Isiah Pacheco expected to be sidelined for several weeks due to a fractured fibula, the Chiefs have decided to sign Hunt to their practice squad.

This move comes nearly six years after Hunt was released by the team on November 30, 2018, following a controversial incident where a videotape showed him pushing a woman to the ground and then kicking her. Although authorities declined to pursue criminal charges after the woman stopped cooperating, the fallout from that incident led to Hunt's departure.

Now, the Chiefs are hoping that Hunt can step up and fill the void left by Pacheco. As a rookie in 2017, Hunt had a stellar season, winning the rushing title with 1,327 yards and earning a Pro Bowl nod. His early success made him a fan favorite, and his return could provide much-needed depth to a backfield that currently includes rookie fullback Carson Steele and running back Samaje Perine, who just ed the team three weeks ago after being cut by the Denver Broncos.

The Chiefs are also managing the absence of veteran Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who is on the non-football illness list and won't be eligible to return until Week 5. With Pacheco expected to be out for at least six weeks, the pressure is on Hunt to contribute significantly.

"We're not looking for the old Kareem Hunt who lit the league on fire," a source close to the team said. Instead, they're seeking a reliable veteran presence who can help stabilize the running game during this critical stretch.

Hunt steps in amid injury crisis

Hunt's time with the Cleveland Browns from 2019 through last season saw him play in 64 games, racking up 2,285 rushing yards and 3,342 scrimmage yards. While the Chiefs aren't necessarily expecting him to replicate those early career numbers, they're counting on his experience and skill set to make a meaningful impact.

As NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero noted, the Chiefs are optimistic that Hunt can provide the they desperately need while Pacheco heals.

In this new chapter, Hunt has the chance to redeem himself and prove he can still be a valuable asset to the team. The Chiefs are banking on his ability to bridge the gap and help them navigate this challenging period.
