Louis Rees-Zammit, the former Welsh rugby star, has received a lifeline to extend his NFL career after being released by the Kansas City Chiefs. Fresh off their back-to-back Super Bowl victories, the Chiefs let Rees-Zammit go on Tuesday after he failed to secure a spot on their 53-man roster. #
However, just a day later, it was reported that the Jacksonville Jaguars are in the process of g the 23-year-old athlete, according to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz.
Following his release, Rees-Zammit wasted no time in distancing himself from the Chiefs on social media, removing references to the team from his profiles.
Initially, it was thought that he might land a position on the Chiefs' practice squad, which would have allowed him to continue improving his skills with the hope of moving up to the main roster. However, after being placed on waivers, the Jaguars decided to give him a shot, potentially breathing new life into his NFL ambitions.
A fresh start
The Jaguars, who ended last season with a 9-8 record, are offering Rees-Zammit a fresh start. With the team's sights set on improvement, they see potential in Rees-Zammit's athleticism and versatility, which he demonstrated during his rugby career and in the NFL's International Player Pathway (IPP) program.
The move is particularly significant as the Jaguars are slated to play two games in the U.K. in October, offering Rees-Zammit an opportunity to perform in front of a familiar audience in his home country.
Rees-Zammit's journey to the NFL began earlier this year when he transitioned from rugby to American football, ing the IPP program.
His strong performance during his pro day, which included a 4.43-second 40-yard dash and a 29-inch vertical jump, caught the attention of NFL scouts, leading to his g with the Chiefs.
Despite showing flashes of promise in the preseason, playing various roles such as running back and special teams, he couldn't secure a spot on the Chiefs' active roster.
