- Dallas Cowboys. Cowboys build elite rush with offseason defensive overhaul
After a lackluster 2024 season, in which they were the 21st-ranked defense, the Dallas Cowboys defensive backfield is about to get the help it desperately needs. Star cornerback Stephon Gilmore visited the team's facility, igniting fans' hopes.
This Tuesday, April 22, reporters saw Gilmore arrive at "The Star" in Frisco, Texas, sparking all kinds of speculation surrounding a possible return for the cornerback after his brilliant tenure with America's Team in the 2023 season.
In 2023, after a lifetime of being a Cowboys fan, Gilmore finally had the opportunity to play for the team, recording 68 tackles, two interceptions, and 13 deflections in 17 games. With Trevon Diggs out due to injury, Gilmore was Dallas' mainstay for much of that season.
Gilmore is a free agent again
Although the 12-year veteran stated at the time he wanted to stay with the team, negotiations stalled, and Gilmore ended up g with the Minnesota Vikings. Last year, the star cornerback once again demonstrated his quality, recording 47 tackles and one interception in 15 games.
Gilmore signed with the Vikings for just one year and $7 million, so he became a free agent again this season, rekindling fans' hopes. Gilmore could fill the spot left by Jourdan Lewis when he signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars at the start of free agency.
Although no deal is confirmed, Gilmore's knowledge of the Dallas defense would give defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus a proven leader on the field. He would also be a great backup in the event of another Diggs absence.
Year-round gs in Dallas
The Cowboys haven't made any blockbuster moves this offseason, and Gilmore's return could be the spark that rekindles fans' faith, especially after Brian Schottenheimer's controversial rise to head coach.
In this regard, executive vice president Stephen Jones stated, "We're always looking to make our roster better. In general, player acquisition is year-round." Does that mean a deal is in place for Gilmore? Only time will tell.
