Trey Lance's career has been a true rollercoaster, and he is a clear example that, despite having all the talent to shine, theNFL is unpredictable, and you never know what awaits you.
The former North Dakota State University player went from being the No. 3 pick in the NFL Draft to facing an uncertain future, but everything has changed recently.
Trey Lance finds a team
The former first-round quarterback had to enter free agency after his contract with the Dallas Cowboys ended.
At just 24 years old, many consider him one of the most talented players with a lot of potential yet to show. Not far from the Bay Area, the Los Angeles Chargers offered him a one-year contract with a $7 million salary.
This prompted a positive reaction from his former teammate and competitor, Dak Prescott, who said via social media, "Yesssir! LFG."
With the Chargers, Trey Lance will have to work to earn even the backup position, as the team also has Taylor Heinicke on the roster and, ahead of him, Justin Herbert.
The good news for the former ND State player is that he will continue in the NFL, where he has struggled significantly and has not managed to become the player they promised would take the league by storm.
Trey Lance, who will turn 25 next month, remains younger than prominent 2024 rookie quarterbacks Michael Penix Jr. and Bo Nix. However, despite his high draft status, Lance has yet to see significant playing time in the NFL.
In his second season with the San Francisco 49ers, Lance suffered an injury and was unable to outcompete Jimmy Garoppolo or Brock Purdy for the starting role. This led the 49ers to part ways with their high-risk pick after just two years. Subsequently, Lance didn't take a single snap for the Dallas Cowboys in 2023, though he saw limited action and eventually started in their season finale last year.
Over his four-year career, Lance has started five games, accumulating 1,063 ing yards, five touchdowns, and four interceptions.
