The Dallas Cowboys recently announced Brian Schottenheimer as their new head coach, bying Kellen Moore, who was widely considered a strong candidate for the role. This decision reportedly left Moore, who served as the team's offensive coordinator under Jason Garrett and Mike McCarthy, both surprised and disappointed.
Moore, now a key assistant with the Philadelphia Eagles, was one of four candidates interviewed for the position. However, three critical factors reportedly influenced the Jones family's decision to move forward with Schottenheimer.

Leadership style differences played a major role
One significant reason for Moore's exclusion appears to be a difference in leadership styles. While Moore has been praised for his intelligence, organization, and tactical acumen, some within the organization reportedly viewed his approach as too reserved or "professorial."
In contrast, Schottenheimer's more assertive and commanding presence was seen as better suited to foster ability and establish leadership within the team. According to ESPN's Ed Werder, this distinction was a decisive factor for the Cowboys' ownership, who believed Schottenheimer could more effectively "command the room."
Timing concerns added complexity to the decision
The Cowboys' decision was also influenced by timing. Moore is currently coaching with the Eagles, who are competing in the NFC Championship Game. There was speculation that Jerry and Stephen Jones were unwilling to wait for Moore's availability, prompting them to expedite the hiring process.
Moore's reaction and future prospects
Sources indicate that Moore, 36, felt confident about his chances for the head coaching role and was taken aback by the decision. While Schottenheimer, 51, and Moore both offered continuity and familiarity for quarterback Dak Prescott, Schottenheimer's leadership style ultimately won out.
Jerry Jones expressed confidence in his new head coach, stating, "Brian Schottenheimer is no longer just a career assistant. He is now the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys."
Meanwhile, Moore remains a candidate for other NFL coaching roles, including the New Orleans Saints head coaching job, where he could potentially face off against his former boss, Mike McCarthy.
For now, Moore's unexpected exclusion from the Cowboys' head coach position leaves questions about his future but underscores the franchise's focus on leadership dynamics over familiarity.
