Trey Lance was dealt a hammer blow by Jerry Jones as the Dallas Cowboys' owner confirms they are going to stick with experience ahead of youth as the team tries to find its footing in the absence of Dak Prescott.
The 31-year-old quarterback is done for the year after suffering a hamstring injury, opening the door for Cooper Rush and Trey Lance to fight for the starting position to throw plays to CeeDee Lamb.
And so far, Mike McCarthy seems to have given the nod to the older man as the 30-year-old Rush has featured in six games and started two of them, compared to just the solitary appearance for the 24-year-old Lance.
And according to Jones, that isn't going to change as the 82-year-old declares Rush is getting better and that he wants his team to stick with experience as they plummet towards the foot of the NFC East.
"I thought Rush actually had improvement (Monday) night from the game before," Jones told 105.3 The Fan. "He didn't have far to go to get improvement, but I did think he had improvement. And frankly, there were times in that ballgame that I thought it was really coming to it.
"We know that we've got limited time to work with these quarterbacks at this particular time, and I would look for us to stay with the experience."
McCarthy at odds with Jones?
Lance was picked in the 2021 NFL Draft as the overall third selection by the San Francisco 49ers after a successful run with the North Dakota State Bisons, where he threw for 2786 yards and 28 touchdowns in the uninterrupted 2019 season.
The youngster then showed promise at the Levi's Stadium in a cameo replacement for the injured Jimmy Garoppolo before being moved back to the second chair behind the-then 29-year-old starter.
However, he found himself displaced from the team when they drafted Brock Purdy as the overall 262nd pick in 2022 and was subsequently moved on to the Cowboys after Purdy proved to be far better than expected.
Since then, he hasn't really been used in Dallas at the AT&T Stadium but that might be something McCarthy regrets after the defeat to the Houston Texans, so is the head coach at odds with the owner?
"To be honest, I should have given Trey some snaps," McCarthy told reporters and media after the game on November 18.
