Ezekiel Elliott's return to the Dallas Cowboys has been deemed a risk worth taking for the long-suffering franchise, hoping to end a 28-year Super Bowl drought in 2024 amid long-term questions surrounding the future of players like CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott -- slated to hit free agency after next season.
Many wondered how Prescott would feel about Elliott coming back to Dallas on a one-year deal. The two have enjoyed a close friendship since entering the NFL together in 2016, and Prescott has at last addressed his pal's surprising return to Big D in new comments.
Prescott: Super excited to have Zeke in the backfield
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Prescott said he is "super excited" to line up again with Elliott -- who spent the 2023 season with the lowly New England Patriots.
"Just obviously knowing our history, my experience with him as a brother, but, in this case, as a teammate (and) understanding what he brings to the team," Prescott said. "Just the locker room alone, the culture he sets, a guy that does everything the right way, from the locker room to the field."
Elliott has spoken about his need to complete "unfinished business" in Dallas, where he established himself as one of the NFL's top running backs during his first stint. Elliott won two rushing titles in his first three seasons and was selected to the Pro Bowl three times between 2016 and 2019, but never took a handoff in an NFC Championship Game -- the Cowboys' goal this season.
Prescott, Jerry Jones, Mike McCarthy, and the rest of the Cowboys' decision-makers hope that Elliott, now 28 years old, will stand out in their new "running back by committee" approach and look more like the perennial 1,000-yard rushing threat he used to be.
