- New York Giants. Jaxson Dart opts out of purchasing No. 2 jersey from teammate Deonte Banks
The New York Giants are hoping to find answers in two veteran quarterbacks who are ready to step up, while waiting for Jaxson Dart to adapt and potentially become the future of the franchise.
While experience doesn't guarantee success, and past success with another team doesn't ensure meeting expectations, this is the challenge the Giants face.
Wilson and Winston will get their chance
Both will aim to revive the Giants' offense, though some already doubt this will happen, presenting a worst-case scenario where Jaxson Dart could be thrust into action sooner than anticipated.
If Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson falter, the former Ole Miss quarterback will be waiting in the wings, but under greater pressure if the team stumbles early in the 2025 season.
In New York, the plan is for Dart to spend his rookie season as a backup, developing patiently, but this hinges on the other two quarterbacks delivering solid performances.
One critic, Kevin Patra of NFL.com, has emerged with a skeptical analysis of the quarterbacks now with the Giants.
Patra argues that neither Wilson nor Winston has done enough to earn the starting role under head coach Brian Daboll, predicting their 2025 performances won't sur their recent NFL showings.
"Brian Daboll might have already named Wilson the starter, but I'm going to keep writing that one in pencil," Patra said. "Nothing Wilson has done in the past three years has indicated he should be handed a starting job at this stage.
Winston, on the flip side, will have some massive games, like we saw in Cleveland. But the turnovers will persist. Chaos is part of the experience. He's far more entertaining than Wilson but also less predictable."
At the very least, fans might hope Wilson matches the numbers he posted with the Pittsburgh Steelers, or at least his performance level, but anything could happen.
Many forget the disaster of last season's quarterback play for the Giants, especially after Daniel Jones' departure. None of the backups sured 1,100 yards.
It's time to question what will unfold, but nothing is set in stone. Perhaps Wilson or Winston will rise to the occasion, or maybe Jaxson Dart will find success from the start when he takes the reins in New York.
