Yes. The fall of Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft continues to be talked about. However, the quarterback is proving he deserved to be picked much earlier.
Selected with the 144th pick by Cleveland Browns, the QB was projected to be picked at least on the second day. Even general manager, Andrew Berry reportedly stated on ESPN.com that Shedeur had more potential than his selection reflected, "We felt he got to a point where he was probably priced wrong relative to the draft. In reality, the acquisition cost was quite low, and we believe he's a player who can outperform his draft slot."
In agreement with Berry's words, the team's head coach Kevin Stefanski made it clear that his selection does not match their confidence in him.
Speaking to CBS Sports' "We Need To Talk," Stefanski said:
Once you're in the building, nobody really cares where you were drafted. Clearly, he has the talent to go higher in the draft. He didn't. None of these guys are finished products, and Shedeur certainly has things he can work on."
In addition, the 43-year-old head coach made reference to Shedeur's performance and his consistency and discipline: "In of the person, in of the kid who's willing to work, I think that's who we're getting," he added.
Stefanski's plan
Shedeur wasn't the only quarterback to the team. Former Oregon and Oklahoma back Dillon Gabriel was previously selected ahead of Sanders - in the third round - and the two Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett as he awaits the recovery of starter Deshaun Watson.
At this point, it will all depend on how Stefanski guides and manages the competition between them. With five quarterbacks on the roster, it's likely that at least two will be cut before the start of the season. However, if his words and praise for Shedeur are any guide... could the former Colorado Buffaloes have a chance to win his starting job?
