Neither first overall pick Caleb Williams nor ninth overall pick Rome Odunze have signed their Chicago Bears contracts despite training camp kicking off in two days. A complicating factor is that Williams does not have an NFLPA-certified agent, which means he must negotiate his contract directly with the Bears, as required by union rules.
While rookie contract amounts are typically determined by draft position, there are important details Williams could negotiate, such as the timing of his g bonus, conditions that might void guaranteed money, and potential cap relief for the Bears if he is released or signs with another team.
"I'm not handling that," Williams said. "My lawyers and attorney and everybody, the head of the Bears, everybody up there up top is handling that. That's not my position that I'm handling."
Excited to kick of his Bears career
Despite these complexities, the contract negotiations should not pose an insurmountable obstacle. However, the Bears, who held two of the top 10 picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, are now on the clock once again, facing the urgent need to secure their top draft picks before training camp begins.
"You start getting to the end of the break and you're training and you're ready to go," Williams said. "Really added. "I'm really happy to be back in Chicago and to get this thing going. We're only about three weeks away [from the exhibition opener]."
