The future of James Cook with the Buffalo Bills remains a complete mystery, although the team is reportedly already considering an alternative to fill the significant void that the star running back could leave. If he departs, Josh Allen will surely miss him greatly.

In this scenario, the option of a free agent player with proven talent over the years in the NFL emerges.

The Buffalo Bills should consider g J.K. Dobbins

James Cook is one of the notable absentees from the Bills' voluntary workouts, and there is concern that he may continue to stay away until he secures the contract he is seeking. Thus, it's time to take action.

It's no secret that Cook is a key piece of the offense, and while Ray Davis or Ty Johnson are good running backs, neither is guaranteed to deliver the offensive production needed.

According to information from Cory Woodroof of For The Win, he believes the team should sign former Los Angeles Chargers running back J.K. Dobbins in free agency.

"With the future of James Cook in Buffalo uncertain due to contract issues, Dobbins would be an excellent depth piece for the Bills' ground game after his resurgent 2024 season with the Los Angeles Chargers," Woodroof writes. "If Cook holds out for any period of time, Dobbins could honestly start for Buffalo if needed. At worst, he fills a valuable role as a rotational running back for a Super Bowl contender."

After dealing with multiple injuries in recent years, Dobbins finally managed to stay healthy for most of the 2024 season and had an outstanding performance, rushing for 905 yards and nine touchdowns, while also adding 153 receiving yards.

According to Spotrac, the former Chargers running back is projected to land a two-year, $8.1 million contract, though with free agency this far along, it will be challenging for him, which works in the Bills' favor.
