Baylor University and the wider college football community are mourning the death of freshman defensive lineman Alex Foster, who died early Wednesday morning in his hometown of Greenville, Mississippi on May 28.
The 18-year-old was shot multiple times and later died from his injuries at a nearby hospital, according to local authorities, marking a tragic end to a promising career.
Foster had recently completed his redshirt freshman season at Baylor and was participating in spring practices, with plans to return to the university later in the week. His sudden death has sent shockwaves through the football world.
"We are heartbroken by the unexpected loss of Alex Foster," Dave Aranda, head coach, and Mack Rhoades, Baylor athletic director, said. "A beloved member of our football family.
"Our immediate focus is on ing Alex's family and his teammates through this devastating loss. Alex's memory will forever be part of our hearts and this program."
Foster, who stood 6-foot-5 and weighed 292 pounds, was a highly regarded three-star recruit out of St. Joseph High School in Madison, Mississippi, and according to 247Sports, he was ranked as the No. 13 prospect in the state.
He was also considered among the top 70 defensive linemen nationally and boasted an impressive high school career earned him offers from several major programs before he committed to Baylor in July 2023.
"In this time of deep sorrow," Baylor University said in a statement. "We draw strength from our faith and the unwavering love of the Baylor community.
"Our immediate focus is on ing Alex's family and his teammates through this devastating loss. Alex's memory will forever be a part of Baylor University."
What was the Cause of Death of Alex Foster, the Baylor defensive linesman?
Authorities responded to a call of shots fired in the early morning of May 28 at 12:11 a.m., the Greenville Police Department confirmed to the Clarion Ledger. Officers found a male victim [Foster] who had been shot multiples times in a car at the scene.
The teenager was then transferred to Delta Health Center, where he died from his injuries less than an hour later. Washington County Coroner's Office later confirmed gunshot wounds were the cause of death of Baylor's Alex Foster.
He was back in Greenville, located 973 miles away, for the summer break and had been scheduled to return to Baylor's campus in Waco, Texas, later that week. Baylor are due to take on Auburn on August 29, which will no doubt be a day of mournful tributes.
