- NCAA. Dan Orlovsky settles the debate on Travis Hunter's NFL future
Travis Kelce is nearing the end of his storied NFL career; Travis Hunter is yet to start his. But their paths are intertwining in the weeks leading up to the 2025 NFL Draft, where Hunter is expected to be a top pick.
Hunter, who won the Heisman Trophy as the most outstanding player in NCAA football during the 2024 season, uniquely contributed on offense and on defense while playing for Deion Sanders at Colorado. His exploits captured everyone's attention -- including Kelce, the legendary tight end who just announced that he would return in 2025 for his 13th season with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Kelce: Hunter should play both ways in the NFL!
Speaking to his brother Jason, Travis Kelce has revealed that he is a fan of Travis Hunter -- and he thinks the two-way phenom has to be given the chance to show his prowess in this way when the 2025 NFL season kicks off in September.
"I think he's proven that he needs to play both sides of the ball," Travis Kelce told Jason on the latest episode of their "New Heights" podcast.
Kelce even put on his coordinator cap and attempted to "scheme" for Hunter, ultimately concluding that his first pro team should focus on developing him as a cornerback while only occasionally playing him as a receiver...so that the Heisman winner does not get burned out so early into his professional journey.
"They'll have to scheme up around him getting too exhausted," Kelce explained. "Like they'd really have to weigh that into their play-calling both offensively and defensively. You can't just go man and expect Travis to run all around the field with a guy like Tyreek Hill. As an offensive coordinator, I'm sending him on a go every play, and eventually, the wheels are going to get at least a little worn."
Hunter is not expected to fall much below the New England Patriots at #4 overall come draft night, and the Tennessee Titans could even see fit to make him the top overall selection on April 24. Hunter, along with Colorado teammate Shedeur Sanders and Penn State rusher Abdul Carter, is meeting with the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday; the Browns have the #2 overall pick. Kelce's Chiefs will not play the Browns in 2025, barring an unlikely postseason meeting.
