Is Coach Prime destined to lead the Cowboys?

Deion Sanders responds to Michael Irvin's fervent wish as Cowboys slide into mediocrity

Deion Sanders has become one of the most respected and coveted football coaches in America, as his Colorado Buffaloes continue going from strength to strength in the 2024 NCAA season. Colorado is 8-2 and ranked 16th in the College Football Playoff rankings -- if the Buffs win out and claim the Big 12 conference championship, they could make the field of 12 and play in the playoff for the first time in school history.

But with success in Boulder has come iration from the NFL for Sanders, who has long been enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame for his stellar playing career. One of Coach Prime's old teams, the Dallas Cowboys, will have a head coaching vacancy come January -- and one of Prime's former Cowboys teammates is banging the drum in an attempt to reunite the two sides in 2025.

Prime changes the subject

Legendary Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin shared a photo on Instagram that was taken on Friday at AT&T Stadium. Against the backdrop of the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson fight, Irvin stopped for a photo with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and wrote on Instagram that he was "praying" for something to help his beloved team.

It doesn't take much guesswork to reveal that Irvin is praying for Sanders to return to Dallas as a "prodigal son" and rescue the 3-7 Cowboys from the NFL's basement. But for now, Coach Prime isn't playing along -- he commented "love ya, man" on Irvin's photo with Jones.

For what it's worth, Irvin isn't the only iconic Dallas receiver calling for the Cowboys to pry Sanders loose from Colorado. Dez Bryant has ed Irvin in issuing a public call for Jerry Jones to make significant organizational changes in 2025 -- including hiring Sanders as the head coach and replenishing his roster with talented young players. This only adds fuel to the fire as the Cowboys chart their road back to contention in the years to come.
